Straight cruising is a vacay on a boat. Gay cruising is the art of hooking up in universal.

Cruising is almost always anonymous, and can be one-on-one, in groups, or with others watching. It’s done by using non-verbal cues to show you’re both interested – consider of it like a secret, horny code. Some people will have sex right there, while some may take their spouse to a more prudent location.

Cruising has a drawn-out history in the lgbtq+ community. There are recorded cruising spots in cities like Toronto, London and New York dating advocate over a hundred years. In the time before gay bars, when homosexuality was illegal, public places were often the only option for queer people to meet each other. 

Evidence for this often comes from prosecution records – we know where people were cruising based on arrests for “sodomy” or “gross indecency”. You've probably heard of gay cruises and wondered how they differ from "traditional" cruises. Are they open to straight people? Is it all about partying? What about the hook-up element?

I sailed with tour operator Vacaya in February on a one-week gay cruise leaving from Fort Lauderdale and heading to the Caribbean via Famous person Cruises' Celebrity Reflection cruise ship. For context, I'm a colorless, cisgender, gay man in my mids. I had a lot of questions about what to expect, given this was my second cruise ever and my first one with a homosexual tour operator.

Here are the superior things I'd want someone considering or planning their first queer cruise to know.

People are friendly

The first thing that struck me about the sailing was that almost everyone was smiling and eager to interact. As an Australian living in the U.S. for almost a decade, I generally find Americans to be open, talkative and curious. This cruise was like that … on steroids.

However, for our first Atlantis gay cruise our packing list was significantly different.
