Youve played just about every variation of gay. How do you know if a gay character is right for you?
I never pick something based on if its gay or not. I just pluck something if the characters right for me. I play a pretty well mix, although these days Ive been playing a lot of bisexuals. I was bisexual on Horror Story and then I just finished a clip where I also played bisexual, so Im in a bi phase right now. Honestly, just the part has to appeal to me. I really do love that theres such a broad spectrum Ive played: gay guys who were more linear down the middle, and though I dislike this phrase straight acting, and all the way to Behind the Candelabra where I was just, you know, super cunt-y.
You suggest that youve worked with many closeted gay actors, and we talk a lot about Cheyenne Jackson recently opened up about growing up as a queer kid, as well as his life as a gay actor, husband and father of adorable twins. In an interview with Advocate, the year-old thespian shared about feeling like he didnt belong, growing up queer in Idaho. Growing up queer, unlike, in the brief town that I did in northern Idaho, I just always knew that I didnt fit. I never felt like these were my people, he stated. Jackson continued, It never felt like abode to me. Once I started to find my people in community theater, I started to really feel okay in my skin. My biggest journey in life really is the journey of being content in my skin and in my body. At 47 years old, its still a daily struggle for me. The actor is starring in the sitcom Call Me Kat, and he is playing the role of Kats (Mayim Bialik) buddy, Max. Aside from operational as an openly gay actor, he has also been married to entrepreneur Jason Landau since I met him at an AA meeting ten years ago. He was just this cranky, angry, talkative guy.
