Xavier Dolan on Film&#;s Gay Double Standard: &#;We Never Discuss About Heterosexual Films&#;

Xavier Dolan made his long-awaited return to the Cannes Clip Festival on May 22 for the world premiere of his latest drama, &#;Matthias & Maxime.&#; Critics were favorable to the relationship, calling it a return to establish for Dolan after back-to-back critical misfires &#;It&#;s Only the End of the World&#; and &#;The Death and Existence of John F. Donovan.&#; Dolan&#;s latest stars himself and Gabriel D’Almeida Freitas as two friends whose relationship changes after they peck each other during the making of a student film.

Speaking at the &#;Matthias & Maxime&#; compress conference, Dolan called out an industry double standard in which films centered around queer characters are almost always labeled &#;gay films&#; or &#;queer films&#; while movies about relationships between men and women are never defined by their sexuality. While &#;Matthias & Maxime&#; deals with a gay storyline, in Dolan&#;s eyes it&#;s as much a film and cherish story as one with heterosexual characters.

Xavier Dolan is fulminating against the lgbtq+ tag that typically accompanies his revered art films.
Though indies such as "Laurence Anyways," "I Killed My Mother" and "Mommy" acquire earned Dolan substantial homosexual cred, sexuality-based pigeonholing has been irksome for the year-old cinema prodigy. Surely, however, it hasn't stopped him from moving beyond those perceived barriers.
His huge break is just around the corner: Dolan has two projects in the hopper featuring Hollywood notables. Marion Cotillard is taking on the role of Catherine in Dolan's "It's Only the End of the World," while "The Death and Life of John F. Donovan," which he's also directing, attracted Oscar winners Kathy Bates and Susan Sarandon.
But first he's making his squeeze rounds for "Tom at the Farm," an eerie drama centered around a young man (Dolan) asked to keep his sexuality on the DL while staying at his defunct lover's mother's farm. The film opens Aug. 14 at Cinema Detroit.

"Tom at the Farm" mingles grief with sexual desire. Why do you think sometimes these two emotions converge, an

At 31, princely-looking French-Canadian director Xavier Dolan is one of the industry’s romantic filmmakers – a Douglas Sirk for the TikTok generation. His films feel like unrequited love letters, rife with scenes of family dysfunction soundtracked by Grimes and Britney Spears.

In the last 11 years, he has released nine films – an output comparable to Jean-Luc Godard in his heyday (with whom he shared the Jury Prize at Cannes in , for Mommy). In addition to writing his own screenplays, Dolan also produces and, with the exception of his debut I Killed My Mother, edits his films too. This is again the case with his latest, Matthias & Maxime, released today exclusively on Mubi.

Despite his acclaim amongst overseas cineastes, the director has struggled to swim in more mainstream waters, saying to The Guardian in “No one knows me in the States, because the movies have been released in such an awkward, irregular fashion, all by different distributors, [with] no continuity.”

Praise at a fresh age gave him a unfortunate ego, generated quite a few embarrassing headlines for flipping out at critics if they didn't like his work.
