A must-see tip from Tom and Marlies was Spreewald, an area southeast of Berlin.  The area is on the flood plain of the Spree River with a mix of canals, farmland and green space/forests.  It is a bit of a playground, holiday destination for Berliners and has an extensive network of cycling/walking paths or you can kayak the canal system.  We opted for a leisurely morning amble along the canals to take in the area.  One of the creatures we spotted was an otter fond animal, on further investigation we reflect it’s an introduced pest, a Natria, they are enjoy a big rat, originally for South America that were introduced into Europe for the fur trade.  It is now causing environmental havoc.  Europe has a native Beaver, though the animal we saw doesn’t meet that description, likewise the introduced Muskrat.  We managed to identify a few birds and trees along the way too.
