Scope and Contents

From the Collection:

The LGBTQ+ vertical files collection is an artificial collection that contains approximately 13 linear feet of material collected over a span of 5 decades by Michigan Articulate University Special Collections staff. The collection includes a wide range of ephemera that was originally used as reference consultation material for many years. These materials include event flyers, programs, correspondence, brochures, pamphlets, and other documentation of local, regional, and national LGBTQ+ organizations, and in some cases anti-LGBTQ+ organizations or rhetoric. The collection also contains clippings documenting topics such as homophobia, the gay liberation movement, LGBTQ+ people in the military, and same-sex marriage.

The collection is open and available for research in the MSU Libraries Special Collections' reading room. For preservation and security purposes, researchers are limited to accessing one folder

The Dorian Society

The Dorian Society was the first and only homophile organization in Seattle, officially founded in University of Washington Professor of Proximate Eastern Languages and Cultures Nicholas Heer served as the first president. Heer had been active in the homophile movement in Boston before moving to Seattle. The Dorian Society’s membership was predominantly middle-class white men. The Dorian Society targeted heterosexual allies by portraying homosexuals as respectable citizens. While advocating the repeal of Washington State’s anti-sodomy rule and increased services for homosexuals, Dorian Society members also encouraged members of the gay society to conduct themselves responsibly in public. Seattle Bisexual Women's Network (SBWN)

Seeks to provide a safe place for bi women to explore all aspects of their sexual orientation and identity. All self identified women are welcome to attend their activities. You can uncover additional information about SBWN on the Seattle Pansexual Women's Network website.

Seattle Married Men's Group (SMMG)

A monthly support collective for married, gay/bisexual men in the Puget Sound. This group meets every 3rd Thursday of the month. Meetings launch at pm at Community Health on 15th Road. The groups goal is to support gay/bi men in their marriages and to provide a place where they can debate the issues that impact them and their wives.
